The story behind the design
Indonesia is not one dive trip. It is several unfinished plans.
Indonesia can offer almost every kind of diving, though rarely in the same place or at the same time. Season and region shape the journey. There is the extraordinary biodiversity of Raja Ampat, the currents and mantas of Komodo, the pelagic routes of Alor and the Banda Sea, the reefs of Maratua, the walls around Manado and the famously small, strange life of Lembeh.
Bali offers another beginning. Divers train along its coastline, look for mantas around Nusa Penida and explore the USAT Liberty at Tulamben or the deeper Boga Wreck at nearby Kubu. Specialist cave routes and new ways of staying close to the water continue to make the map feel even larger.
For friends entering the world of diving, we continue to recommend Neptune Scuba Diving. We believe first breaths belong in a pool, where early mistakes are less theatrical, and Neptune builds that controlled beginning into its entry-level training. Bali has many good dive centres. Neptune may simply bake the best cookies. That gives them a special place in the tummy.
The design gathers that variety through Raja Ampat’s karst islands, manta rays, turtles, coral, a camera, a compass and a traditional liveaboard. It is less a record of one trip than a list of reasons to return.
The wrecks attract fish, photographers and, apparently, marriage proposals.
Choose a region. Check the season. Indonesia will still be unfinished.
